Second Life, the original online virtual community now plays host to the spookamania.com clubhouse and group.
I had heard of Second Life many times over the years but had never bothered to check it out, interesting as it seemed. Recently, after inquiring after the whereabouts of a certain missing forum member (Hawthorn) I ended up in-world. She claimed she never opened her IM anymore because she was always in Second Life. Remembering how interesting I'd always found the idea, I immediately signed right up. Not only was it just as interesting as I'd always hoped, it was great! Every single aspect of the world has been created by and is owned by other "residents," all of whom you can speak to via local IM (chat) or private IM. The graphics and general feel might remind someone of Sims 2 except you can go anywhere and do anything you want. You can get a real job DJing in a club for money you use to buy clothes or pay rent for your store, which sells items you created in build mode. (Hawthorn has a jewelry shop.) You can own land and rent parcels or rooms to people. You can gamble in a casino or pole dance for pay. You buy clothes and wear appropriate attire when you go out to a metal club or wear formal clothes to a jazz lounge. You can dance all night if you want! I recently met a real life friend in-world and we actually went on a virtual date, dancing the night away at Franks Place. It was much more interactive than just chatting online and a hell of a lot more fun. I acquire most of my money winning contests for best costume or something. Mature parcels (which is most of them) might host a nude beach or have a topless contest. Better deck out your avatar because hair isnt cheap and you can never have enough of it! After residing in Second Life for only a couple of weeks I decided the website had to have a home there as well. I paid to upgrade to the full account, which allows me to own land. I bought a small square and tossed up a house of windows. Fellow Spookamaniacs are more than welcome to find me in-world under the name Spooky Mistwallow and add me as a friend or IM me if I'm online. All members of our group are welcome to use the spookamania clubhouse to change their clothes (you can be banned from parcels for being naked or in various states of undress.) You may also hang out there and linger in the hot tub on the rooftop courtyard. In the future we have plans to include games to win 'Lindens" or SL money, contests, discussions on Harry Potter, The Girl in the Tower, writing fiction and anything else we feel like talking about. For those of you who just arent sure please give Second Life a try! See you there! http://www.secondlife.com once in-world: open search from footer toolbar. Open people tab.
